Modify is one of the technical skills available in System Shock 2, allowing modification of ranged weapons.
The ranged weapons can be modified to make them more effective. The weapons have two modification levels in addition to the base unmodified level. The effects of increasing the modification level are weapon-specific. Usually, modification increases the weapon damage with other effects such as increased clip size, decreased kickback, or reduced reload time.
If a weapon can be modified, then the weapon MFD includes a MODIFY panel on the side. Different weapons have different modification skill requirements for each modification level. The modify MFD display resembles the other technical skill MFD’s; your relevant skills and equipment are listed at the bottom, the top describes the effect of modifying the weapon, and the right side has the cost of the attempt and a START button. Like the other technical skills, your chance of influencing a given node is increased by 10% per point of skill and 5% per point of CYB. If you are successful in modifying the weapon, then the weapon gets the appropriate bonus. If you critically fail, the item is broken.
The French-Epstein Device can also be used to increase the weapon modification level.

- Modification level 2 damage increase is relative to the base modification level (i.e., unmodified weapon).
- Grenade Launcher damage bonus does not apply to Disruption Grenades.
- The Modify skill can be considered low-value skill in a single-player game, especially in the higher difficulty levels. There are at least 7 French-Epstein Devices in the game, of which 6 are found before the Rickenbacker. The 6 French-Epstein Devices allow full modification of 3 weapons.
- In cooperative game, it may be useful for one player to get expertise with the Modify skill. This way, the whole team can get fully upgraded weapons even with the limited number of the French-Epstein Devices found in the game.
