Access Cards are key items in System Shock 2. They are used to gain admission to certain areas and systems that are otherwise inacessible. There are several Access Cards of different types scattered throughout the Von Braun and UNN Rickenbacker that are needed to open locked doors. Most Access Cards are found on the corpses of dead crew members, but some Cards are lying on the ground and in niches or found among the contents of various desks.

The Access Cards are needed as a consequence of a state of martial law declared by Sergeant Melanie Bronson, which led to all primary sub-sectors of the ship locked down.

Used by dragging through a card slot reader, these cards appear deceptively low-tech. However, they are designed with a triple encrypted fractal data string - the cards mutate in synch with each other over 50,000 times a second, making them nearly impossible to counterfeit.

  • Rickenbacker Access Card (no working Summon Code exists in the game due to an error in an internal object category tree ; code should be "rickenbacker card", but it summons a non-working card ; the card itself can be found on the first level of UNN Rickenbacker, beyond the hull breach, on the body of a male UNN soldier)

  • Cargo Bay 1A/1B Access Card (cargo bay 1a/1b): shows up as a blank entry in your Keycard-Access Recorder
  • "Deck 5 Crew's Quarters Access Card" (crew 2 card): does not appear in your K-AR
  • Engineering Override Access Card (eng override key): does not appear in your K-AR
  • Medical Access Card (med card): shows up as a blank entry in your K-AR

Trivia[]

  • All Access Cards found in the game bear the image of Marc Miller with vertical word ACCESS written across.
  • Some summoned cards have a different appearance than all the others. They have a thicker stripe with Von Braun logo on it, and a thinner stripe marked with big VB letters. This is the list of these cards:
    • "rec crew key" (Deck 5 Crew's Quarters Access Card): white thicker/light blue thinner stripes, grey borders
    • "med card" (Medical Access Card): white thicker/light yellow thinner stripes, grey borders
    • "med annex key" (Medical Annex Access Card): yellow thicker/grey thinner stripes, red borders
